Certificate in General Studies for Senior Learners Programme (長者通識教育證書課程)


The programme aims to equip elder learners with knowledge in three different cluster areas namely (a) Health and Technology, (b) Chinese and Western Culture, and (c) Integeneration Harmony. By completing modules over these clusters senior learners will be able to integrate the knowledge into their daily life and achieve the goal of active aging and lifelong learning.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to:
  • provide senior learners with knowledge of basic information and communication technology for supporting quality of life;
  • equip senior learners with knowledge of the historical and cultural varieties of Chinese and Western civilizations; and
  • foster intergenerational harmony by introducing the ways of interacting with the younger generation.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon completion of this programme, students will be able to:
  • apply knowledge of recent technology to the practice of quality of life;
  • identify the culture and philosophical thoughts in Chinese and Western societies; and
  • suggest ways of developing good relationship with different generations.

Programme Structure

The Programme is a part-time 1-year QF Level 3 programme consisting of 6 modules with a total of 90 contact hours. It consists of three core modules and three elective modules. Senior learners have to take one core module and one elective module in each of the three cluster areas.

Programme Features

  • Core modules focus more on basic knowledge while elective modules focus more on application of knowledge to senior learners' daily life.
  • Hands-on practice of technological tools such as smartphone applications will be introduced so that elder students can keep up with the communication technology.
  • Knowledge of the culture of younger generation help promote intergeneration harmony.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible, applications should be aged 55 or above.


Upon completion of the Programme, a Certificate in General Studies for Senior Learners will be awarded by Lingnan Institute of Further Education, Lingnan University. Graduation certificates will only be awarded to students who have passed all modules with overall passing mark of 50 and at least 70% attendance rate in each module.
